Dog Containment Fence Elements

If you want to allow your dog to run free in your yard without having to worry about it running away, chasing other animals, or bothering passersby, but don’t want to erect a chain link fence or brick wall, a dog containment electrical fence may be the answer for you. They are very effective and cost a lot less than putting up a traditional fence or wall would cost you. Below is a description of the elements that make up a dog containment fence system and how each individual part works.

1) The collar. Every system will come with a collar that needs to be secured around the neck of your pet. Within this collar, there is a receiver that can pick up the radio waves produced by the other parts of the system. As the pet nears the boundary that you get to choose and lay out, the collar picks up on the radio waves and beeps to warn the dog. It should, at that point, turn around and walk the other way. If it doesn’t, the collar will then issue a small electric shock to the dog which will convince it to get away from the boundary. Some collars issue vibration warnings to the dog as well which really helps with the ones that don’t have very good hearing.

2) Wire transmitter. The wire that is included in the kit is what will physically form the boundary that you lay out. You will have to bury it under the ground and it acts as both a receiver and a transmitter or radio waves. This is what sends out the signal to the collar to set off the warnings and corrections.

3) Transmitter. There is one central transmitter included in the system that sends out the signal to the wire. You should mount this transmitter in a safe, dry space. The wire picks up on the transmission and passes it along to the collar as it gets close enough to pick up on the signal.
