If you want to allow your dog to run free in your yard without having to worry about it running away, chasing other animals, or bothering passersby, but don’t want to erect a chain link fence or brick wall, a dog containment electrical fence may be the answer for you. They are very effective and cost a lot less than putting up a traditional fence or wall would cost you. Below is a description of the elements that make up a dog containment fence system and how each individual part works.

1) The collar. Every system will come with a collar that needs to be secured around the neck of your pet. Within this collar, there is a receiver that can pick up the radio waves produced by the other parts of the system. As the pet nears the boundary that you get to choose and lay out, the collar picks up on the radio waves and beeps to warn the dog. It should, at that point, turn around and walk the other way. If it doesn’t, the collar will then issue a small electric shock to the dog which will convince it to get away from the boundary. Some collars issue vibration warnings to the dog as well which really helps with the ones that don’t have very good hearing.

2) Wire transmitter. The wire that is included in the kit is what will physically form the boundary that you lay out. You will have to bury it under the ground and it acts as both a receiver and a transmitter or radio waves. This is what sends out the signal to the collar to set off the warnings and corrections.

3) Transmitter. There is one central transmitter included in the system that sends out the signal to the wire. You should mount this transmitter in a safe, dry space. The wire picks up on the transmission and passes it along to the collar as it gets close enough to pick up on the signal.

Many pet owners not only want to control the areas their pets can roam outside, they want to do it inside as well. Keeping furniture free of pet hair or teeth marks, making sure plants are not chewed, or protecting the fish in your fish tank are just a few reasons why some people get motivated to do this. The indoor dog fence, or variations of it, is a perfect solution to the problem of having free roaming indoor pets. Below is a description of the top performing indoor dog fences and how they work.

1) The standard indoor dog fence. These systems work just like their outdoor counterparts, except for one difference. Instead of utilizing a wire that the homeowner needs to bury under a couple inches of dirt, the indoor systems use disk looking transmitters. Most systems come with several and you can place them anywhere throughout the interior of the home. Put them in front of plants, on furniture, etc. As the pet gets very close, a beeping noise will emit from the collar. Then, if the animal continues to get closer, an electric shock or spray will occur and the animal will remember to leave the area. Neither the spray nor the shock are damaging in any way.

2) Electronic sprayers. These nifty little electronic devices work off a motion sensor. Again, you place them wherever you want your dog or other pet to stay away from. If the animal goes near there and gets close enough to trigger the motion sensor, the sprayer puts out a mist with an odor that is very unpleasant to your pet’s sensitive nose.

3) The Scat Mat. These are used predominantly to keep your dog off of furniture. It works very simply. When something goes on it, it shocks them. Again, the shock is minor. It’s about the same strength as an electric static shock you experience reaching for a door knob. They work very well and can even be put away once your pet realizes not to go on a certain piece of furniture.

While there are several brands of hidden dog fences or electronic dog fences as they are sometimes called, one brand has climbed ahead as the leader in the industry. The Pet Safe fence is widely respected by both industry experts and consumers for its quality, easy installation, and performance. The following is a description of the Pet Safe fence and why it is so good.

1) The collar. Several reputable reports claim that the collar secures better than the collars provided by the other brands. Furthermore, the Pet Safe collar doesn’t only beep as a warning to your pet as it nears the boundary, it also vibrates. This is great for dogs who may be hard of hearing or just need a little extra reminder to turn around. A good warning cuts down on the amount of corrections that have to occur.

2) The batteries. Unlike other brands that require six volt and other non standard batteries, Pet Safe dog fence systems utilize 9 volt batteries. Not only is it cheaper to buy these replacement batteries, it is also a simpler process and takes less time.

3) The amount of wire it comes with is literally double that of other leading electronic dog fence brands. Instead of getting 500 feet worth of wire like many companies provide, the Pet Safe system comes with 1000 feet. This allows you to cover more area, but also have left over wire to do repairs or add to the boundaries if you need to.

4) Durability. Simply put, they are the highest rated wireless radio dog fencing systems on the market today. They last long and the warranty offered by the manufacturer is excellent.

If you want to keep your dog or other pet safe and secure in your front or back yard, and don’t want to put up a big old ugly fence or wall, an underground pet fence may be a good option for you. Also called hidden, electric, or wireless radio pet fences, these amazing electronic devices can do a tremendous job of keeping your dog or pet behind a boundary that you choose. The dog will not see anything, neither will the neighbors and neither will you.

How do underground pet fences work?

These electronic systems utilize three major parts. There is the wire that gets buried in the yard which forms the boundary, the transmitter that sends out the radio waves, and the collar that must be placed on the pet or dog.

The buried wire puts out a signal that the collar can pick up if it is close enough to the wire. The system is a simple one. As the dog walks toward the wire, the collar will start to beep or vibrate, or both. This serves as a warning to the dog that he or she is walking too close to an area that he shouldn’t be in. If the dog does not recognize the warning signals and continues walking toward the wire, either an electric shock will occur or a spray will be released. Both are very safe and won’t harm the animal at all, but will be unpleasant enough to make it walk back away from the boundary.

The advantages of these electronic dog fences are several. First, the systems are much cheaper than regular fences are. Secondly, because they are underground, the “fence” is invisible to everyone. Third, they help to train your dog and can help to make your dog more obedient. Last, you can easily protect bushes, plants, trees, flowers, or anything else you want to keep your dog away from.
